Prosecuting, Simon Spence KC told the court Auriol Grey was 'angered' by a cyclist riding on the pavement and gestured in a 'hostile and aggressive way', causing the rider to fall from her bike and into the path of a passing vehicle cycling

A pedestrian"angered" by a cyclist riding on the pavement gestured in a"hostile and aggressive way" causing the rider to fall from her bike and into the path of a passing vehicle, a court has heard.

He told jurors they would hear from Mrs Ward's husband who says his wife was an"experienced and competent cyclist". Ms Grey — who the court heard has cerebral palsy and significant eyesight issues, but does not consider herself to have a mental disability — was "angered by the presence of a cyclist on a footpath", Mr Spence said.

The court also heard that Ms Grey left the scene before the emergency services arrived and went to Sainsbury's to buy groceries.

I don’t think cycling on a pavement was a good idea imo

The conviction is basically a disability hate crime. All involved should be ashamed and have their roles questioned.

Ludicrous verdict

And yet if the cyclist had done the same they wouldn’t be charged let alone convicted.

We live in a twisted and tragic world if there are others like Auriol Grey who believes death is the appropriate punishment for riding on the pavement. She can now consider the reaction in jail

When it says she is on trial it means in the court, not on Twitter.

Looking at street view there seems to be a shared path on one side of the road. Huntingdon Council haven't even used a particularly wide path.

Left the scene before emergency services arrived to buy groceries - so zero conscience then?

High speed judged by a pedestrian is usually 5mph, the fact she went shopping in Sainsbury’s as the woman she shepherded onto the road lays dying tells you everything you need to know about this individual

This tragic incident highlights, irrespective of the final verdict, the disparity within our current legal system. This lady has been charged & is being tried for Manslaughter, which carries a potential life sentence. Death by careless driving carries a max sentence of 5 years!

Biggest takeaway from this is the poor infrastructure that puts a cyclist and pedestrian in that situation. So I hope someone takes action against the council as a contributing factor. Having said that, as a cyclist, I have a lot of sympathy with the pedestrian here.

And if the Covid 19 tranche 1 cycling schemes were actually provided but we're not, at that time the cyclist would probably still be with us.... lessons must be learnt

In my town.. No way you can cycle 'high speed' on that pavement...but in reality it highlights the poor cycling/ walking infrastructure in the town. For sure you should be cycling on the inner side of the ring road at that point but when you have to swap half way round it's mad
