Inmates at His Majesty’s Penitentiary are expressing fears and concerns about a rat problem at the facility.

Two inmates says the unit they’re on is infested with rats and mice. One argues it’s a health and human rights issue “This is not right, I know we’re inmates” he says, “but we’re entitled to certain things here.”He says they all get up at 8:00 and then have to get in the showers. The showers are next to the laundry room which uses all the hot water, resulting in them having to take a shower in “ice cold water.

These replies 🙄 What led them to prison? Was it survival? Was it a result of their situation or upbringing? Did they have access to mental health resources or basic needs? Is it a generational cycle? Everyone is still deserving of basic needs, health and safety!

What do the criminals want? A resort , you reap what u sow….

When you tear down abandoned buildings, landscape large areas of land for progress, the rats scatter, not die. They adapt to their surroundings, our properties. We need to kill them, not rehome them. They will bring disease eventually.

Who cares? Did any of them care when they effected others lives by their choices?

Yup. Lots of rats 💯 the 2 legged kind.

Our prison guards work in these conditions too......get after your government to build a new facility. You are in prison for a reason......ever stop to think about that?

Here's an idea for the inmates to consider... if they hadn't behaved in a way that resulted in their imprisonment they wouldn't have to worry about the rats at HMP. Honest to jesus.

Well then. Stay out of the place?

We treat prisoners sometimes better that our elderly! Food for thought. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

There are also mice in hospitals and the Confederation Bldg. remember the time patients and staff called Paddy about it? No? Me neither. JMJ.

While this is unfortunate, these are not human rights issues, as defined by the Human Rights Act of NL.

We'll always have a rat problem now because they have no predators. All the cats in town are kept indoors now, and when the cat is away the mice will play. In this case it's rats, but it's the same thing.

I'm sure they never considered , that they were violating people rights, when they were committing the crimes , that put them in jail in the first place . WhatComesAroundGoesAround

I saw a documentary on Youtube about a maximum security prison in the US where some inmates had cats for pets. Some cats actually roamed freely around the prison. It's the only real solution to the rat problem.

Big rats, huge rats.

If there was only a way someone could avoid spending time there….

St. John’s is over run with rats. We’ve caught 14 in and around our home. (east end neighborhoods).

Then dont do the crime. Get a brain and be normal.
