A Euclid man pleaded guilty to scamming elderly residents through a sweepstakes scam.CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Euclid man pleaded guilty Monday to carrying out a scheme to steal from elderly residents by telling them that they had won a lottery or a sweepstakes.
Javon Spencer, 31, faces between a year and 18 months in federal prison after he admitted to conspiring to commit mail fraud and three counts of mail fraud. U.S. District Judge Benita Pearson scheduled Spencer’s sentencing for May 18. Spencer entered the plea on the day his trial was set to begin.Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian McDonough said during the hearing that Spencer scammed at least 10 victims out of about $95,000.Spencer carried out the scheme from March 2018 through April 2019. He and others involved in the scheme contacted several elderly people and told them they won a lottery, sweepstakes or some other contest.
Several people sent money back, including one woman who shipped $4,500 back to Spencer, according to court records. The money ended up in Spencer’s bank account. Spencer during the hearing said he is married and has a family. He earned a sociology degree from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He’s a citizen of Jamaica but is in the midst of applying for U.S. citizenship. Pearson said that his guilty plea would likely have some effect on his citizenship and that he could be deported.
