The Japanese embassy has formally asked the Philippine government to deport four of its citizens amid reports that detainees in the country directed a series robberies in Japan through their smartphones.

Akihiko Hitomi, the Japanese embassy media relations officer, said the post on Monday sent to the Department of Justice the request to hand over the four Japanese.

The Japanese media have reported on the suspects having allegedly orchestrated robberies in several prefectures in Japan from a detention facility in the Philippines. Remulla said some mobile devices had been confiscated and were now in the possession of Philippine authorities.
