Thirteen civil rights protesters shot dead, 15 injured in the Bogside by British soldiers in 1972

An immediate inquiry, led by then-lord chief justice Lord Widgery, was labelled a whitewash after it largely cleared the soldiers of blame.

The Saville Inquiry concluded in 2010 that none of the casualties were posing a threat or doing anything that would justify their shooting and former UK prime minister David Cameron apologised in the House of Commons, saying that the killings were “unjustified and unjustifiable”. “Derry and the North has come a long way from the events of Bloody Sunday and with the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement approaching we should be proud of our achievements.”
