Ocean City’s city council has approved a new local law that will allow police officers take additional steps to help put a stop to “breach of the peace” offenses committed by young people, beyond merely a verbal warning.

that the new ordinance will allow for police to take additional steps beyond just a verbal warning for nuisance issues. Those offenses include excessive noise, littering, vandalism, riding bicycles on the boardwalk outside of allowed hours, or fireworks violations.

“The new designation is aimed at giving police the authority to remove offenders from the scene where they are creating disturbances, take them down to the station, and notify their parents to come pick them up,” said Doug Bergen, Ocean City spokesperson, in the Inquirer’s story. It also isn’t intended as a zero tolerance policy - Bergen went on to say that police can still give verbal warnings, but they now have authority to act in cases where kids are being particularly unruly and not responding to those warnings.
