Nearly half of Colorado’s House Democrats have signed on to a bill that would allow local governments to enact rent control, repealing a decades-old prohibition and setting up a potential showdown with Gov. Jared Polis.

and it comes as lawmakers and Gov. Jared Polis weigh an array of legislation to address Colorado’s growing housing crisis.

Supporters cast rent control not as a silver bullet to Colorado’s housing affordability crisis but as a tool that should be available to local officials. Mabrey said he supported ongoing debates about land-use reform — intended to increase the supply of housing statewide — but that affordability must be included in that policy discussion.

Boesenecker sponsored a bill last session that would’ve enacted rent stabilization policies for mobile-home parks, a first foray into price controls.after Polis signaled that he would veto the bill if it included rent stabilization.

“Whenever strict rent control is in force, it can have a negative effect on both landlords and tenants. Since it increases competition for these units, it's harder for a tenant to get one. It also inhibits developers from constructing new residential housing.”

Worst idea ever. Does this party ever consider the unintended consequences of their terrible ideas? This will make the crisis significantly worse.

Most of my neighborhood is air bnb’s now.

Can one of these inept politicians in the state legislature show where rent control has worked? NYC? California?

Rent control is only a short-term good thing. In the long term, it's disastrous. But oh hey, let's do it anyway. Who cares about the future. We gotta worry about NOW. (Yeah, that's what got us HERE)

big if true lol I hope it passes, but im not holding my breath

Socialists are going to do socialist things.

KEEP GOVERNMENT OUT OF PRIVATE BUSINESSES

December 26, 2022. Not to try and assume any credit, but nobody in Denver was talking about a rent cap until I popped off like this on Tulsa television last month. If you need me to kick anybody else's ass around there you know where to find me bc I love Colorado.

It's about time! Anybody with any real sense looks at Denver as a zero value these days. They want you to pay 10x what the place is worth to live in a town covered with goose crap & rife w/ rude people insulting strangers thus provoking mass shootings.

Sweet

Rent control is a great way to reduce the number of rentals available. Policies like this lead to shortages. Why would anyone want to rent their property if they can't control the price?

Meanwhile Low income apartments are holding people hostage in expired leases and sending them to collections...

Polis should request the state legislature send him a bill to upzone the entire state. Rent controls won't solve the underlying problem: low affordable housing supply

End single housing zoning. Force cities to allow ADU’s instead of garages
