Former Howard Government Minister Peter McGauran says Prime Minister Anthony Albanese must “step in” to the Alice Springs crime crisis otherwise his “wider agenda” from the Voice will be “affected”.

“We still don’t have an explanation why the government did lift the controls on alcohol sale and distribution – I haven’t seen a proper explanation yet,” he told Sky News Australia.

“Action’s needed … otherwise the whole debate about the Voice being the consultative body will get conflated with the government not doing enough on the practical, law and order issues all Australians unhesitatingly want assisted in Indigenous communities.”

Alice Springs crime rate soars after alcohol ban liftsAlice Springs is back in the national spotlight as the town of around 26 thousand people sees a marked increase in crime and violence. MPs in the Northern territory are calling for a reintroduction of alcohol bans as more than 200 children, with some as young as five, are roaming the streets late at night. According to The Australian newspaper many of those kids are drinking alcohol, sometimes in the form of hand sanitiser diluted in soft drinks, or consuming deodorant, petrol or glue. It has been just over six months since the Stronger Futures laws lapsed meaning alcohol was suddenly legal for the first time in many Aboriginal town camps in 15 years. AlboMP Dou your Job and get your lazy Minister and yourself to Alice Springs immediately! Removing alcohol bans from indigenous communities was a very silly idea. Much as I hate government restrictions in some cases the people have to be protected from legal drugs. Oxycodone for example is very restricted for reasons of addiction. Why is alcohol any different. Dumbest thing I ever saw and all for no benefit to anyone.
