Since Jan. 10, when Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the 'Protect Illinois Communities Act' legislation — which bans the sale and distribution of assault weapons in Illinois — the new law has been hit with a barrage of legal claims.

The case's attorney, Thomas DeVore, a former Republican candidate for Illinois attorney general, argues the ban violates the equal protection clause of the constitution, and claims the legislative process used to pass the ban was flawed.

Another was added to the mix Tuesday when a coalition of four gun rights groups, including the Illinois State Rifle Association, filed a federal lawsuit alleging the ban infringes on the rights of law-abiding citizens, court documents say. "The 2nd Amendment is fundamentally about self-defense, and the 14th Amendment is about not having our rights infringed. This new law makes criminals out of law-abiding citizens" said Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, in a statement. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signs comprehensive legislation to ban military-style firearms on Jan. 10, 2023.

It has been hit with legal claims because it obviously fails the standard set forth in NYSRPA v Bruen. I can't imagine why they even tried to do this in the first place when it was obvious it would be overturned.

First Lawsuits Filed Against Illinois Assault Weapons Ban, With More to ComeOpponents of Illinois’ new ban on assault weapons and extended magazines promised legal action, and at least one suit has already been filed against the measure in Effingham County. Il government and Prizker is embarrassing. The lawsuits will expose just how inept they are I personally can't own a gun...but there's no better time then the present to probably own one. Many people wishing to break the law have very powerful guns. You can't take a butter knife to a gun fight.
