Brock is one of the unsung who offers water to the masses without fanfare. The teachings of the late civil rights leader inspire her humanitarian cause. A self-described child of the ’60s, she fondly remembers King’s campaign for equality and peace during the turbulent era.
Janice Brock buys cases of water Friday. For the past 13 years, Brock has handed out water to people in the Martin Luther King Jr. March. They walked from their house at Olive and Dawson to the MLK Plaza at Houston and New Braunfels, the former site of the MLK march commemoration ceremony. A back injury ended her days in the procession.
Brock started with 325 bottles; her supply was gone within seconds. She didn’t like telling people she was out of water. The next year, she had about 650 bottles, and the number’s grown ever since.
