The statue is located at a crossroads in La Flotte, a municipality of 2,800 inhabitants on the popular holiday island Ile-de-Re, off France's Atlantic coast.
Its initial home was a private garden, but the family later donated it to the town which set it up at the crossroads in 1983. That move triggered a legal complaint by La Libre Pensee 17, an association dedicated to the defence of secularity, on the basis that a French law dating back to 1905 forbids religious monuments in public spaces.
Local mayor Jean-Paul Heraudeau called the discussion around the statue"ridiculous" because, he said, it was part of the town's"historical heritage" and should be considered"more of a memorial than a religious statue".
Woke trash
Shocking.
Would the grotto in Lourdes not fall under that? Or is that on private land and this law only applies to public land?
What next?Catholic Churchs 🤔
Damn tootin'
Shame other States around the world wouldn't implement something like this. Believe what ya want but there are other that don't Believe what you do.
Hatred of Catholicism is rife. Most persecuted & violently attacked group in the world. No sympathy from any of the leftist so called civil liberty NGOs. why rte reported this - to stoke it up here? The amount of Catholics murdered for their faith doesn't get reported.
What a brilliant idea, we need to copy this in every town and village here
Do RTE scour the world news looking for anti christian stories? Why not report on the Protests in Ireland against unvetted immigrants? On the fear women have of going out alone? Anything relevant to actual Irish news?
10,000 mosques not a problem.
It was a memorial from WWII on a DONATED piece of property. Alternately, the public should give the property back to the nearest living relatives and leave the memorial statue in place. Respect vs. Greed
Mayne get rid of the mosques and sinagogues before removing our heritage.
🙄militant secularism
You report on THIS but not on the stabbing of people in France 🇫🇷 sound like gaslighting to me by IrelandisFull
I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. (Genesis 3:15)
We have so much in common with the French who'd have guessed
