The City of Cape Town is working closely with law enforcement officials to secure the Manenberg pool after hundreds of residents stormed the pool over the weekend. | Lisaleesolomon1

Residents entered the pool despite the facility being closed, and then threw stones at staff who tried to get everyone out of the water. Wayne Dyason, spokesperson for law enforcement, said officials responded to the Manenberg pool incident over the weekend and monitored the facility on Monday.

She said the department received reports that members of the public verbally assaulted staff but they were unable to identify these individuals. "Rust was observed when the filtration plant was put into circulation. Rust pushing through the pipes deteriorates water quality making it hazardous for public use. Rust also makes the water milky and difficult to see the pool basin, which severely hampers the task of lifesavers on duty," Van der Ross said.

Sources with knowledge of the pool, and who did not want to be named, said the influx of people who flooded the premises was"shocking".There was a total disregard for us, even when we repeatedly told them the pool is not safe for them to swim in. Even though the water looked clear for people to swim, it was 100% not safe. And no one would listen to us ... more people started coming and jumping into the water.

Community policing forum chairperson Vernon Visagie said the City could have avoided what took place over the weekend had they been"open and transparent" with the residents."Had the City known they weren't going to open the pools for the holidays period they should have said that and then made alternative arrangements for the residents, but because of the stigma the area has, they chose to not keep us informed," Visagie added.
