Former Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena and four other top officials were responsible for failing to prevent the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings that killed 279 people, the Supreme Court said in a landmark decision Thursday.

Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena waits next to Navy officers for a group photo during a ceremony commissioning P 626 ship, U.S gifted to the Sri Lankan coastguard at the main port in Colombo on July 6, 2019. – The vessels are to be used to help merchant shipping and protect the islands coastline.

The seven-judge bench ruled that Sirisena had been negligent in not taking measures to thwart the attack, despite solid intelligence warnings two weeks earlier. Sri Lanka’s former police, intelligence and defence chiefs were also held responsible and instructed to compensate victims’ relatives.
