A school shooting that Virginia police said was committed by a 6-year-old student represents an extremely rare occurrence of a young child bringing a gun into school and wounding a teacher, according to experts who study gun violence.

Fox analyzed school shooting data going back to 1970 from the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, which is located at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He said the data listed school shootings involving children ages 7, 8, 9 and older, but not 6-year-olds.

“A 6 year old gaining access to a loaded gun and shooting him/herself or someone else, sadly, is not so rare,” he said in an email. In the Newport News case, Police Chief Steve Drew said Friday that the teacher suffered life-threatening injuries but that her condition had improved somewhat by late Friday afternoon. He said the shooting didn’t appear to be an accident and that it was isolated to the single victim. He said the student and teacher had known each other in a classroom setting.

Parents and students were reunited at a gymnasium door, Newport News Public Schools said via Facebook.

Experts are not always in schools. If you all could see what’s in all of America’s students’ lockers, you would be terrified. TERRIFIED !!!

The first ever school shooting was thought to be a “rare occurrence” also. Soon this will be the norm.

Extremely rare tapi udah ada beberapa sebelumnya, piye tah?

This is not rare. Our society has normalized mass shootings so age is irrelevant.

I expect the child’s parents to be held accountable. Also their parenting….as it truly begs the question…how is it the child got access to the gun?

This 'child' knew enough to get a gun and how to use it when he was in an 'altercation'. I don't think there's rehabilitation for such minds. Signs of sociopathy start early. Check for bruising in neighborhood kids+dead animals

Republicans are the ones to blame

You all are going to have to confront these gun laws at some point.Till then I really don’t give a fuck to be honest.

Is this considered terrorism !?

A law to criminalise the owner of the gun for poor handling of the gun.the licence must be revoked and face a big punishment

Rarity is nice...... Impossible would be better..

why do we not hear about the parent or guardian

A usual day in America

How many times will it happen before the experts agree that they do not know it all?

It’s irrelevant that it’s rare, the fact that it happened at all is unacceptable.

I think your safer in Sinaloa Mexico with the cartel than at an American school…high school or elementary. 🇨🇦

And your basket case country just keeps on throwing up surprises. Serioisly the rest of the world looks on and just shake their heads.

Columbine was 'rare' when it happened. Then it became a near daily occurrence.

I live across the ocean and I can remember another 2 or 3 similar cases in the US. I think you have the wrong definition for rarity

Reports are saying the boy and his family are illegally in the US and were part of the individuals bussed to DC from TX… still waiting to see if they were the ones at Harris’ house.

Wow, that’ll be a great comfort to the teacher and her family! 🙄

xtremely rare? rofl and do better research

No motive?

It's totally obvious that the only way to stop a bad 6 year old with a gun is to have a good 6 year old with a gun. Hey NRA, is that about right?

Now now, come on. We've spent the past 8 years telling men 16-17 year olds are children too. And we know how often they bring guns to school. Don't lie

Charge the owner of the gun! He/she should have had the gun safely locked up in a gun box with a lock on the trigger and the bullets in a separate location. I hope and pray the teacher makes a full recovery and sues the gun owner for attempted murder.

Maybe reframe this as another example of parents failing to properly safeguard their weapons, allowing a child access which led to a shooting incident — right shannonrwatts !

Typical American day

Rare

you need experts to figure out it’s rare for a 6-year-old to shoot their teacher?

The responsibility should be falling on the parents

Who are the parents?

Happy New Year!

The 6 year old is simply a member of our well regulated militia, and should be accorded the respect that deserves.

As long as it's 'extremely rare'

We need to charge the parents. Period.

It doesn’t matter if it’s an extremely rare occurrence. That the child had access to a firearm and took it to school to shoot a teacher is beyond me. Irresponsible parents!!

A GOP mantra, 'our thoughts and prayers.....'

The child needs counseling. Prosecute the parents.

The parents are responsible, not the child.

Rare now maybe. Keep going GQPDomesticTerrorists you’re doing great.

When you vote red you may end up dead.

Clearly we need responsible Six Year Old control.

So now the bar is “Is it a rare occurrence for 6 year olds to bring guns to school and shoot their teachers?” After it becomes common the gun worshippers will say “the only thing that can stop a bad 6-year-old with a gun is a good 6-year-old with a gun”

Parents should be charged!

We need laws to make it illegal for 6 year olds to carry guns to school. That will solve the problem.

That's an absolutely insane thing to have happen. This is what happens when you prioritize gun ownership with no emphasis on responsibility. People just leaving their weapons laying around the house for their kids to grab.

He got the gun in his stocking. 'Murica!

Not shocked it is a boy. But whoever left the gun out needs to get arrested. Not like a 6 yr old actually understands consequences. Can’t wait to hear about the parents or whoever is raising him.

Trying to downplay it much? Yes its accurate to say a 6 year old shooting someone is rare, but the average age for a school shooter is 16 years old. Something like 70% of all school shootings since '99 have been committed by someone under the age of 18.

So any 6yr old can get a gun in America? I guess common sense background checks and psychological evaluations are not needed for kids? Where were the 'good guys with guns' who were supposed to shoot the 6yr old to protect the teacher?

Lil' Nigga Equity

No reporters asked the cops where the kid got the gun? Is journalism dead
