Although the jury did not explain the sentence, Jefferson’s family found symbolism: They said

Carr struggled with coughing fits during the first week of the trial in early December and was hospitalized. She has battled health problems the last few years, her family has said. She was also hospitalized in 2019 when Jefferson was killed. Jefferson moved into her mother’s East Fort Worth home to care for Zion and her mother.

Former Fort Worth police Officer Aaron Dean was convicted of manslaughter for the killing of Atatiana Jefferson and is now in a Texas prison.
