Could a four-day work week become the norm?

When Joe Dance was offered the chance to earn his full salary by working just four days a week, he was sceptical.

It's not about cramming five days' work into four. Instead workers are earning 100% of their salary for 80% of the hours they would normally do. The aim is to be more productive. But at the halfway point in September 86% of companies taking part said the four-day week was working well and they were likely to keep it.Mr Dance said: "I've kind of eaten every single one of my words purely because, you know, it's actually made us better."

"It's not exactly restful, but it's wonderful. Having a newborn was part of the reason I decided to give it such a good go. Because once that time is gone, you don't get it back," he said.

It'd be nice but good luck keeping the same wage with this lot

I’d love it if it did. A much better work life balance. Unfortunately I don’t think the NHS will go for it.

Not for supermarket workers. NO!

Working home 🏡 don’t interact with others humans and living beings on the planet 🌎 except livestream face2face connection

Love it. Amazing machines and super fast computers have taken the toil out of daily tasks. The broken man achieving 65 years of age from 50 years hard labour are hopefully consigned to history. Bring on a more flexible lifestyle where well-being is the number one priority!

Absolutely unworkable in most professions and just an excuse for working less but getting paid the same. Can see it at BBC but would be good if they worked 4 days to start with.

Not for those who are self employed. Work 4 days get paid for 4 days!!

It will happen, but only as death-throes capitalism tries to save itself.

It would be ok if the UK was wealthy. Actually we are bankrupt.

most people today do not know what a days work actually is - The uk has lost its way

Don’t know what the fuss is about. I worked in the NHS for many years and in my department, most full time staff worked 4 days, sometimes 3 days a week. You worked your contracted hours, and because we had to provide 24 hour cover, this wasn’t a problem.

Yes.

4 day week just means 5 days hours crammed into 4 days.

Oh dear, the something for nothing brigade at it again

With all these illegal immigrants coming here, British people will soon be on a 3 day week.

This is offesive..Work is a 'white idea'

It's already happening, Thursday is the new Friday.

I already only work four days a week it’s just my employer isn’t aware of this.

For middle class office workers maybe...but for the majority working class no way.

4 days, no paid annual leave and no maternity pay. The sunny uplands of ToryBrokenBritain

Especially if you work in the public sector.

It’s happening already in many companies. Just try getting hold of anyone in marketing, HR etc on Fridays

I don’t trust anyone whose eyebrows move so much when talking

That would kill my overtime no thanks

I think a longer weekend would help with recharging batteries, mental and physical wellbeing

No 🙄

Or 3 day week would be better

Pathetic. Don’t fix what isn’t broke!.

Absolutely... enough people manage well on a zero-day work week...

Four more days than most benefit people do anyway
