Minister of State Ossian Smyth, responsible for the Circular Economy, says he wants cigarette companies to come under pressure to clean up their act by reducing cigarette butt waste either through promoting more responsible disposal or by removing single use plastic from the product.
"For a long time we've had cigarette butts just cast aside and then you have a big cost to the councils and also a lot of volunteer work going in to collecting this litter, taking it away, and what we haven't done is actually charge the cigarette companies for that.""The cigarette filters actually contain plastic," Minister Smyth said.
He said the money charged to the cigarette companies would be divided as to market share and will be used to collect the litter itself as well as collecting data and communicating with the public. He said over the course of the next year the government would be measuring how many cigarette butts are on the ground as part of the National Littering Pollution Monitoring System which recently found that almost half of all litter was cigarette-related."They're everywhere," Minister Smyth said.
HAHAHAHAHAH, so from now on we can all throw out garbage to the street and blame the companies?
Same should apply to all fast-food takeaways, which is a lot worse than cigarette related litter.
But yet they can't force price caps on energy companies... Wankers the lot of them
Whose going to pay for the dog poo all over Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey? How many have actually been fined for this? It’s worse than Paris.
A sweeping brush
cant see any way that this can be remotely enforceable, and could become very expensive for Government i.e. The Tax Payer to try to enforce it. 'Its not my butt gov, prove it'
The companies and the motorist are the only groups obliged to pay in this country. The lad who litters can safely ignore any fine, even if there was a warden or Garda to enforce our current laws. It's no wonder councils don't employ wardens any more. Depressing waste of time.
GocleanD has made a great scientific report of this problem. Check it out at
More green taxes
You have to support stop sigrate making company
Why don't FFG Try This Here.
Maybe if the councils provided more outdoor ashtrays and bins it would help the situation by all means charge the upkeep to the cigarette companies if you must, but surely the excessive tax would cover it.
Did you ever hear such BULL-SHIT. Another Tax. People who want to smoke. It's their entitlement. But it's their responsibility to discard the remains. Not Litter everywhere. How will they police this. How will they know, whose cigarette- butt, belongs to which company. A Farce.
Great. Now do dog poo
I'm not a smoker but that's a joke! Why should they be responsible for people having no manners ffs!
Brilliant!
Next up is the latte levy...another 'green' tax.
If they start checking who makes the cigarettes maybe they will realise how much non duty paid cigarettes are coming into the country and how much revenue they are actually losing and how are they going to get them to pay ?
Isn't there like a 70% tax on them? Why are kids being sent out to pick up rubbish, what happened to the cooperation paying street cleaners. Not saying people should liter but when was the last time you saw someone sweeping footpaths? Now it's up to tidy towns .
They can do this but can't force anything on the energy suppliers... Lmao.
Just ban people from doing everything and keep eamon Ryan happy planting his window pots to feed the nation! The country's gone feckin mad with unchecked emigrants. homelessness .lgbtq+ trans agenda targeting children.rte do a program on cigarette butt's in howth ? Madness!
It’s people who litter. People who do not care for neighbours or environment. Charging companies is not going to change the behaviour of those individuals….
Yes RTE news .....How is the homelessness situation now .... hospital waiting lists ... redress for mica ..... redress for victims of Thalidomide .... redress for all the other victims of State crimes ...
What about tyre manufacturers, brake pads manufacturers ! They're poluting our land and waters.
The same needs to be done to Coca-Cola ans literally any other brand you can think of.
Damn, we need this in the US too.
