The Dems swept countywide races in November, continuing to deliver a blue wave in Dallas County elections. A sole Republican officeholder remains, a justice of the peace.

For the first time in recent history, they control all but one county office. Steve Seider, a North Dallas justice of the peace, is the lone Republican elected official in the county. Sommerman defeated Republican incumbent, J.J. Koch, in November -- with help from a redrawn district map following the latest census.Jenkins told the packed room it was his pleasure to administer the oath of office to his friend and “my lawyer against Greg Abbott.

Many diverse faces, particularly those in robes, ascended the stage to be sworn in, to cheers and applause. Black women are widely represented among Democratic officeholders. Gradual demographic changes in the early years of the new millennium foretold the party’s fortunes, and Democrats have increased their gains every election cycle.
