“Mahsa Amini is now a global symbol for freedom, not just in Iran,” says Nina Ansary, a historian and women’s rights activist. Other moments have brought calls for change. A 2006 campaign sought to gather one million signatures to change Iran’s discriminatory laws, and for the last eight years, journalist and activist Masih Alinejad has posted videos of smaller groups of women engaging in acts of civil disobedience such as walking in the street without hijabs.
