The Prime Minister is drawing up changes to the asylum system – but critics warn it could mean leaving the European Convention of Human RightsDecember 4, 2022 4:02 pm
Mr Sunak also previously suggested that the Government could bring the definition of asylum closer to the UN’s Refugee Convention, which is less broad than the European Convention of Human Rights. “Since most European countries have zero asylum approvals and Sweden designed their whole system of zero approvals around both European Court’s precedent, it clearly isn’t the problem,” he tweeted.
Mr Sunak also called for an end to the use of hotels to house Channel migrants and even suggested using disused cruise ships, which was denounced by charities as “illegal”. However, he stopped short of any detention of asylum seekers.: “I know that the PM is hugely working on it and doesn’t want another plan that won’t deliver.”
It also urges the Government to give such migrants the choice of being sent to Rwanda or their home country, while it also calls for it to be illegal for any asylum seeker to claim asylum having come from a safe country.
