In a Supreme Court case about a Colorado designer who doesn't want to make wedding websites for same-sex couples, both sides predict dire consequences.

Smith’s attorneys at the Arizona-based Alliance Defending Freedom say that’s not true. “I think it’s disingenuous and false to say that a win for Lorie in this case would take us back to those times where people ... were denied access to essential goods and services based on who they were,” said ADF attorney Kellie Fiedorek, adding, “A win for Lorie here would never permit such conduct, like some of the hypotheticals that they’re raising.

Smith wants to begin offering wedding websites, but she says her Christian faith prevents her from creating websites celebrating same-sex marriages. That could get her in trouble with state law. Colorado, like most other states, has a public accommodation law that says if Smith offers wedding websites to the public, she must provide them to all customers. Businesses that violate the law can be fined, among other things.

Among Smith’s other opponents are the Biden administration and 20 mostly Democratic-leaning states including California, New York and Pennsylvania. The states told the court in one of 75 legal briefs filed by outside groups in the case that accepting Smith’s arguments would allow for widespread discrimination.“A bakery whose owner opposed mixed-race relationships could refuse to bake wedding cakes for interracial couples,” the states said.

so you're going to force her to make websites?

This about individual rights, not gay rights!!!

Really this is at the supreme court? Why are we wasting money and time on this. If someone doesn't want to make you a cake, website, whatever, find someone who does and move on.

Her business. Her choice.

So communities soon might be able to refuse service to lgbtq folks, thus driving them out of their communities. The first subgroup to be targeted. This is disturbing.

She's never been asked to make a wedding website for a same-sex couple. This case was created from nothing to give a fascist right wing Supreme Court the opportunity to discriminate against gays. Shameful. ExpandTheCourt

They have the right to refuse service to anyone …. For any reason . You dont like it move to some shithole like canada

You are in business to make money - turning away customers is bad for business

White Evangelicalism is at the root of everything bad happening in the US these days. It doesn’t preach Jesus. It preaches its politics. It is a diseased and poisoned sect.

Someone is laundering money through her. She’s a puppet being used by those much more sinister than her.

The first

I'm bisexual but I think it would be a moral outrage if I had the right to force someone to conduct business with me against their will. The right to refuse business is far more important than the desire to feel included!

A 'website designer' that has never designed a website for anyone is suing because she 'might be' asked to create a wedding website for a gay couple? Did I get this right? Sounds like the ADF found someone created a 'business' so they could go to SCOTUS! No wonder she's lost!

You can't be cynical enough. She's never created a website for anyone, str8 or gay. No one has asked her. She just wants to know that she can discriminate against people who are not like her. I hope they shut her down.

We should make all business owners who want to discriminate post a BIG sign on the door and on their websites, etc. saying exactly which groups of people they don't want to serve. Bigots rely on anonymity so they don't lose business from decent people. Don't give it to them.

Any business can make decisions on what they want to do for their business. If the lady says no, then she has that right. All this case is, is ideas from the left that are unAmerican in the least.

US suffers from homelessness, gun control issues, high homicide rates in major cities. yet, Supreme Court is so busy looking after the alphabet people... no priorities whatsoever.

This has gone from the ridiculous to the sublime. According to Alan B. Morrison, a constitutional law expert at Georgetown U providing context for the article underscored that Smith doesn’t currently do wedding websites. As such, the case should be thrown out, PERIOD

Think I'll file a lawsuit against the restaurant I went to the other day that said proper dress and attire is required. That's discrimination complete b*******. Lol

My body my choice. Your business my choice.

Why do people insist on doing business with BIGOTS. There’s a world of people who want your business and respect you choices.

These people claim it's against their religious beliefs yet they insist on forcing those same beliefs upon people who do not share their experiences. Doesn't feel fair when it's the other way around huh? 4get her I wouldn't pay her a rusty nickel to do 💩. Home Depot vs Lowes

Why the fuck so we keep being these suits for them to get smacked down? Why the fuck are these suits always based in Colorado?

Republicans are garbage

I don't understand why gays take such offence, just take your business elsewhere. 🤷

it's her constitutional right

I don’t understand having a public business but not wanting to render services. Unless the client is asking to arrange their fetish porno site, what does ppls sexual orientation have to do w/anything? Nowhere in the Bible does it speak of not having business dealings w/gay ppl.

_Politics If she currently doesn‘t do such websites, the appeal should be dismissed as moot.

What about the hunter Biden laptop case?

Businesses have a right to refuse service to anyone, barring they don't discriminate against 'protected classes of people.' Honestly, how many protected classes are there now? The business owner should also not face discrimination. That's where the 'protected class' should start.

Why would a gay couple want to give her money anyways? Hire and support from within the community!

This also proves that gay people rule the world somehow.

She's a private individual, she should be able to make up her own rules, right? Other cake shops in town. Or. How about these options: 1) make your own cake 2) don't have a cake Entitled to the bitter end.

This case is a lot like the one with the other guy and what people are forgetting here they never refused the product just the decorations. That's a huge difference

Discrimination in business is unacceptable the gay community must prepare itself for war with conservatives bigots .

I will never get the desire of some to refuse business of two people in love

I am 💯 in support of gay rights that being said, no private business should be forced to produce amenities or products for any one person or any one group. If you don’t like it go somewhere else it’s a private business. If there isn’t one, make one.

If someone doesn't like your lifestyle, don't use their business. Why would you fund those who hate you?

Legally speaking, Pandora's Box either way.

What about freedom? Hasn't a man the right to chose his clients?

This article misses a very important point. She would gladly provide services to those people, but not provide them what they want. This would be like walking in to a Starbucks and asking for a steak.

The only side facing dire consequences here are queer people who will lose rights

Freedom

Is the woman a bigot? Yes. Should she be able to refuse a personalised service to those she is bigoted against? Also yes. Should she be boycotted by all that find her views offensive? Absolutely.

Let me get this straight…Republicans think the government can require business to serve unmasked and unvaccinated people during pandemics but even the off chance someone might ask a business to make a website for a same sex wedding is a cause for a lawsuit?

Future of America hangs in balance

How very Christian of her. If someone told her they didn't want to see the cross around her neck because it offended them, she'd be screaming from the mountain.

This is so dumb. I’m a web designer. When a client comes to me we get a sense of each others values and a feel for if we are a good fit to work together. I can assure you any gay couple would not want to work with her. Better to work with someone who rallies w you!

If someone refused to service her because she’s Christian she’d be the first one to cry about it.

“Both sides” has got to stop.

Send them my way. I’d love to design the site!

Would she refuse food from the couple? Would she refuse medical care the couple ? Would she refuse a police command from the couple?

She has clearly forgotten the part where Jesus would love everyone equally regardless of their lifestyle choices. This woman doesn't represent the rest of us who equally cares about everyone. I used to be against different lifestyles but it doesn't affect me.

Currently the Economist Democracy_Index the USA is classified as a flawed democracy, not a full democracy because of anti human rights nonsense like this. Every country with religion as part of gov't is oppressive and violent, Repub USA is no exception

what I see is that the 'west' has nothing to offer its ppl in real progress & doesn't want to - all it has is fk'g hedonism and the low impulse control ferals cheer it on as progress. i see that white leaders globally are trash and have no idea to progress their nations and ppl.

Christians have a hard time understanding that they aren't the only ones who want their way of life to be respected.

If your “faith” won’t allow you to serve the entirety of the community equally then find a new venture. Institutional bigotry is still bigotry.

If you need a fairy tale to make your life have meaning may I suggest picking one that doesn't mandate bigotry? The number of American 'Christians' who use their religion as an excuse to be hateful is shocking.

There was a similar case in Ireland where a bakery who didn’t want to bake a cake for a gay wedding was sued.

Why is it always Colorado that wants to force businesses to do these things?

The marriage equality act is designed to force businesses to do just that. That is actually what it is all about. The media only told you about the heart-warming parts.

Why would a capitalist want to let their personal beliefs get in the way of making money....unless of course they are a Christo-fascist...

That woman can take her 'Website business' and shove it up her derrière where the sun doesn't shine. That should be SCOTUS's ruling. No one has asked her to design a website for a same sex marriage and she is suing based on a presumption that someone will. 🙄

I notice you call it a 'gay rights' case, as opposed to a 'religious liberty' case. Your bias is showing.

I'm so tired of people using religion to hate

christians are always about hate.
