UN condemns fresh death sentences by the Myanmar junta against seven university students, which took the tally of those on death row to 139

Several more people have been sentenced to death"in secretive courts in violation of basic principles of fair trial", the UN human rights chief said.The Myanmar junta has handed out at least seven more death sentences this week, taking the tally of those on death row to 139, according to the United Nations.

“Military courts have consistently failed to uphold any degree of transparency contrary to the most basic due process or fair trial guarantees,” he added. Turk said the military-installed government has arrested nearly 16,500 people for opposing the army takeover, including about 1,700 who have been convicted in secret courts without access to lawyers.
