First, there's the question about a head-to-head Republican primary. Among registered voters who identify as Republican, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis beats the former president in such a contest 60% to 40%. Among independent registered voters, DeSantis leads 65% to 35%.Another important result: Among all registered voters, DeSantis would start out tied with Joe Biden at 42%. Trump, on the other hand, trails the hugely unpopular incumbent by double digits, 44% to 34%.
Republicans obviously know Trump, and they still like Trump. He has a 67% to 32% favorable/unfavorable rating among his own partisans. But that doesn't mean they want to renominate him. They are ready to get behind someone else for president. And as someone with universal name recognition, what could he possibly do at this point to change their minds?
This is just one poll, but expect to see a lot more results like this one as other states are polled.
