Hong Kong pro-democracy publisher may face life in prison under security law

Jimmy Lai broke into Hong Kong’s rambunctious media world 30 years ago armed with the belief that delivering information equates with protecting freedom.

The Hong Kong Department of Justice has asked for the trial, which will be overseen by three judges, to be suspended pending a decision from Beijing about Lai’s defense lawyer. Attacks on Giordano by the Chinese government prompted Lai to sell his shares in the business and devote himself to the media world.

Opposition to the bill transformed into months of sometimes violent protests as demands for greater democracy in Hong Kong escalated. The protest movement, which eventually was snuffed out, lacked any clear leader, but Lai’s high profile made him a target of the authorities.

He knows the fate of staying yet he has chosen not to leave Hong Kong. The regime has announced the purge on him even no formal trial has yet taken place. Indeed we may see a worse outcome as extradition to mainland China is now possible, hence death penalty.

Hong Kong publisher's national security trial postponedHONG KONG (AP) — The trial of a Hong Kong newspaper publisher who was arrested in a crackdown on a pro-democracy movement was postponed Thursday after the territory's leader asked China to effectively block him from hiring a British defense lawyer. I am shocked they even let him have a lawyer to start with. Why even bother with a trial? Not like they're going to let him have a fair one. Clearly. The method of prolonging the lawsuit by not appointing a lawyer was often used by left-wing extremists in Japan. It seems that similar people have the same ideas.
