An Ontario man killed his wife with his children next door in the same apartment then disappeared for more than 13 years before being found in Mexico, a Brampton prosecutor said.

In his opening remarks to the jury, Crown attorney Brian McGuire described how Henry Morales allegedly killed his wife Malena inside their Brampton apartment on July 11, 2006.

He was finally found on Feb. 24, 2020, in Mexico, where he was arrested on an international warrant and returned to Canada to face a charge of second-degree murder. As Melena, 31, was left for dead in her bedroom in their Steeles Avenue, Brampton apartment, Morales took his two young sons, aged 10 and seven, out to play mini putt, the prosecutor said.

The following day, the boys did not speak to or see their mother and Morales told Malena’s mother and co-workers that she had been in a car accident, but was OK and was being treated, at the hospital, McGuire said. McGuire said bloodstains on Malena’s right hand included a mixture of DNA from her blood and from Morales.
