VANCOUVER — B.C.’s human rights commissioner is calling for the end of liaison officer programs that put police in schools just as Vancouver’s school board…

In a letter to the B.C. School Trustees Association, commissioner Kasari Govender recommends that the programs be ended by all districts unless they can demonstrate an evidence-based need for them that can’t be met some other way.Sign up to receive the daily top stories from the National Post, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Govender says Indigenous, Black and other marginalized students, as well as their parents and communities, have raised significant concerns about the harm caused by having police in schools. The decision to end the Vancouver liaison program in 2021 was made after a review prompted by concerns that uniformed officers make some students anxious or upset, including many identifying themselves as Black, Indigenous or people of colour.Article content

The motion to reinstate the program, tabled by trustee Preeti Faridkot, calls for the implementation of a new program no later than September 2023.

Only BLM doesn't want police in schools. I wonder why? 🧐

Maybe someone should visit schools on York district in Toronto. Crime, drugs, violence against teachers and students, teachers not going to work citing personal safety concerns.

it's exhausting trying to fix 'stupid'.

Who on Earth runs these Human Rights Commissions? Safety in schools is a human right. Police help with this.

Hurt feelings or dead kids...hmm tough choice 🙄

' the programs be ended by all districts unless they can demonstrate an evidence-based need for them ' And then the BCHR admits they have no evidence it would be a problem in Canada.

Twisted world we live in. Sick world really.

Well, remove the police and see what will happen. Personally i think it is a bad idea.

BC needs to get rid of the NDP.

Woke BC human rights commissioner. Protect the children from agendas, teach critical thinking, build relationships with police and help them be protected.

Why stop…then restart?

Having the police in schools helps build trust between the police and the students. How is that a bad thing?
