Civic organisation Defend Our Democracy has weighed in on a Supreme Court of Appeal ruling on former president Jacob Zuma and a Constitutional Court ruling on Janusz Walus, who was jailed for the murder of Chris Hani.

Defend Our Democracy says a Supreme Court of Appeal ruling on former president Jacob Zuma's release on medical parole demonstrates that no one is above the law.

It says the SCA ruling on Zuma's unlawful medical parole from the Estcourt Correctional Services facility demonstrated fairness and that no one is above the law. The ruling on Monday stated that former correctional services boss Arthur Fraser unlawfully authorised Zuma's release on medical parole in September last year. Jacob Zuma must go back to jail and prison bosses must ‘lawfully’ decide on his release - appeal court

The SCA said it would not consider whether the time Zuma had spent on medical parole should be considered in determining his remaining sentence period. It said Fraser's successor, commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale, should look into it.

I believe that the SCA has taken the views of the public in consideration. Will read the judgment though. Death causes lifelong pain anyway. Why do we have a parole system if convicted murderers cannot apply for parole.

Defend Our Democracy’s views differ from the sentiment of many African people who believe that Janusz Walus should not have been given parole for assassinating Chris Hani. What about the impact on the Hani family who have received a life sentence of pain and anger with no parole?
