The U.K. Supreme Court ruled that Scotland does not have the power to hold a new referendum on independence without the consent of the British government

Scotland's Government Just Received Another Blow in Its Bid for Independence

The top court ruled that the Scottish Parliament “does not have the power to legislate for a referendum on Scottish independence.” Independence supporters plan to rally outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and at other sites later Wednesday. The pro-independence government in Edinburgh wants to revisit the decision, though, arguing that Britain’s departure from the European Union — which a majority of Scottish voters opposed — has radically changed the political and economic landscape.Sturgeon argues that she has a democratic mandate from the Scottish people to hold a new secession vote because there is an independence-supporting majority in the Scottish Parliament.

The Supreme Court justices agreed. They said it is clear that “a Bill which makes provision for a referendum on independence – on ending the sovereignty of the Parliament of the United Kingdom over Scotland – has more than a loose or consequential connection with the sovereignty of that Parliament.”

Like a little child that keeps grinding you down until the parent gives in to have a quiet life. Pathetic

So let me get this straight. You have a referendum to leave which you lose, I think actually more than one. So you keep holding them until you win and leave. So will you keep holding them until you vote to reenter, then correspondingly keep having them Ad Infinitum?

NewYorker Newyorktimes business SCMPNews How can the PM of the UK stand and openly state his support for Ukraine Independence and not listen to the people of Scotland wanting theirs?

I'm just a dumb American but I believe everybody has a right to govern themselves. If Scotland the home of my ancestors wants to be free let them be free. By forcing people to comply you risk creating a more dangerous situation. See raising a teenager for proof.

What a surprise!!

We will benefited only by being united, not by separated! Scotland might be out of mind to hold a referendum for divorcing the UK.

The people of Scotland are being denied their democratic right, to vote on the future of their country, by a government elected by the people of England and led by a Prime Minister elected by a tiny fraction of the population. The UK is not a Democracy, it is a SHAM!

Tyrants!

As if Scotland will follow that ruling.

The UK Supreme Court ruled on the basis of what is permitted by the devolution settlement.

The consent is simple we can have it by the weekend, all we need to do is threaten RishiSunak with a GeneralStrike. He can't afford that risk, it'd destroy the UK completely when it's currently on it's knees. All just for our chance to vote again.

Democracy is not allowed in Scotland.

Not a voluntary union any more.

Scotland is not a voluntary member of a Union. We are an occupied country under a colonial power, unwilling to allow its people the right to self determination in breach of the UN charter.

Scottish independence: Supreme Court to rule on referendum caseThe court was asked to clarify whether the Scottish government can hold indyref2 without Westminster consent. The lying charlatan Tories will be all but wiped out at the next GE. The only actions that can save them and the Union is either rejoining the EU or joining the single market and customs union. If Scotland wins, gets out and rejoins, the rest will need to follow. Shame on UK supreme court if denied the Scots their right. Scots can then decide if they want to be part of the UK or not. England will benefit if Scots leave and GBP will strengthen. Prepared for disappointment via a stitch up

IndyRef2: Second Scottish independence referendum needs Westminster's approval, Supreme Court rulesScotland cannot hold a second independence referendum without first getting the approval of the UK government, Supreme Court judges have ruled. Is a union really a union if one member forces others to stay? This is genuinely comparable to the EU refusing us to hold a referendum in 2016. THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN UPROAR. If countries are held in a ‘Union’ against their will, that union is treading on very thin ice. Let's see all the complaints now 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Great 👍🏼
