One lawyer was arrested on a judge’s order for ‘noise-making’ near a courtroom, but was quickly set free.

Apart from Mr Effiong, here are some lawyers in Nigeria who were convicted for contempt of court in the past.

Human rights lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi was convicted for contempt and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment in 1990 by the then-acting Chief Judge of Lagos State, Ligali Ayorinde. Olu Onagoruwa, the then legal adviser of the Daily Times newspaper, wrote an article which was published in the newspaper on 18 May 1979. The then Chief Judge of Anambra State, Emmanuel Araka, committed him to Enugu prison for contempt. The judge felt the article was contemptuous of a pending case before him. The conviction was later quashed at the Court of Appeal on 5 February 1980.for challenging him on the summary of a case before the court.

The lawyer challenged his committal at the High Court and lost. He, however, won at the Court of Appeal in 1990.Arrested for ‘noise-making’
