Democrats Hidalgo, Garcia and Briones hold thin leads as Harris County vote tally continues

Incumbent US Rep Sylvia Garcia reacts as she watches televised election returns at the Election Night Watch Party hosted by the Harris Co. Democratic Party held at Chapman and Kirby Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022 in Houston, TX.If Hidalgo holds on to win, she will have overcome an aggressive re-election fight in a hostile political climate for Democrats.

Democratic Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, left, is facing a challenge from Republican Alexandra Moral del Mealer. Republicans believe rising crime will aid their attempts to reclaim some countywide seats. Democrats, however, are feeling a little more optimistic than they were earlier this year, saying the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade will help their efforts to keep Harris County blue.

Those two forces are clashing, according to Nancy Sims, a political analyst and lecturer of political science at the University of Houston. Turnout overall was down 10 percent, but de Leon noted it still marked the second-highest turnout for a midterm election here. And the total number of votes will far surpass the total in 2014, the last time Republicans won countywide seats.

She won and she won good! Thank you!

There is no way Lina won. I’ll never be convinced she didn’t cheat

Lina won. MAGA Mealer’s millions and your endorsement didn’t work.

It’s sickening it takes more than a few hours to tally for one freaking city
