LIVE: Ford, Lecce to discuss CUPE education worker action

Premier Doug Ford says legislation making it illegal for CUPE education workers to strike could be taken off the table.

CUPE workers walked off the job on Friday despite the Keeping Students in Class Act that imposed a contract on the 55,000 janitors, education assistants and maintenance and invoked the notwithstanding clause, which allows the province to override Charter of Rights and Freedoms sections. “As a gesture of good faith, our government is willing to rescind the legislation. We’re willing to rescind Section 33, but only if CUPE agrees to show a similar gesture of good faith by stopping their strike and letting our kids back into their classrooms,” Ford said at a news conference today.
