The Citizens’ Parliament – the mobilisation arm of the New Nation Movement - has vowed to challenge the"unconstitutional" Electoral Amendment Bill.
Mashego said they had made this publicly known. However, she said that, after doing so,"the ANC and its home affairs committee in Parliament quickly ran around the country to tick the compliance box without any in-depth education and public awareness drive". She said the Bill of Rights, the cornerstone of South Africa’s democracy, was explicit that “everyone is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection and benefit of the law" and that"equality includes the full and equal enjoyment of all rights and freedoms”.
Mashego said the unfairness of this aspect lay in the fact that political parties did not have this requirement.
