The court cases against rappers Young Thug and Gunna, who are having their lyrics used against them for gang charges, has sparked outrage from other rap artists who say there is a double standard.

Rapper Young Thug's bond was denied on a RICO charge related to the YSL gang; Gunna was also denied bond.

"I'm proud that the Recording Academy ... that many of my friends - rock friends, pop friends, country friends, alternative friends, and jazz friends have joined the movement of protecting Black art," Liles said. Hip-hop artist E-40 backed the legislation in his home state of California and spoke with Newsom about the importance of the bill.

Referencing the lyrics of hip-hop artists in criminal charges - some of which mention acts of violence or criminal activity - is a practice that has drawn criticism from both freedom-of-speech advocates and the musicians themselves, who argue that introducing lyrics into case with the implication that they are reflections of reality, discounts rap as a form of artistic expression.

Any legislation limiting prosecutor’s ability to use Rap lyrics in criminal cases is total 🐂💩. Criminals posing as rappers have long used song lyrics to boast about their illicit activities. Tough cookie if they get burned for not keeping their mouths shut.

Have they heard the phrase, anything you say WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU? Beyond that Rappers don't want 'Free Speech.' They want the 'right' to be OPENLY ReverseRacist STOP Rewarding HateSpeech against Women in BlackMusic🤬 There's your DOUBLE STANDARD

Isn’t rap music freedom of speech? Regardless if the lyrics are offensive or not, it’s their freedom to express it from government interference.

outrage i tell ya!

Smh. Is it the artist or the record labels The labels can’t profit off of these black artists and their trauma if the government keeps on locking them up for the music that makes them so much money….🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 I’m sure the labels are pushing this more than anyone.
