A 58-year-old Ontario man is facing charges under a new law against intimidating a health-care worker.

Ottawa police say there is a warrant out for the arrest of Louis Mertzelos in relation to threatening phone calls made to a health-care worker.

She says police told her about the charges this morning, stemming from multiple harassing phone calls she received in September. There are similar separate offences for harassment of politicians, judges, journalists and members of the clergy. Kaplan-Myrth says more than one person called to harass and intimidate her and her staff, and the man charged today is alleged to also have targeted her with antisemitic slurs.

Good!

Ersatz_cook We need to crack down on this kind of behaviour. Zero tolerance.

It’s really hard to feel any pity for this. Having been sent to the er three time this week without ever receiving care, this is a slippery path to arresting those who just desire treatment. While in this situation it was warranted, there will be hundreds that arent. Sad…

Good more of this, the only way these people will learn.

A new law, yeah right. It's called harassment, and the law against it has been on the books for a long time.

I’m willing to bet he looks like me

Well then there should be charges laid against nurses that neglect patients. My dad just had a stroke last week and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. When we got there an hour later the nurses had let him fall asleep. They didn't even give him any medical attention.

STOP patients abuse by Healthcare workers! Privatize health care. Give Canadians the ability to walkway from abusive healthcare workers!

Harassment is wrong but it is a very fine line when it comes to health officials over stepping thier bounds. There is a certain power that comes with thier titles and forcing medical decisions can also be a form of Harassment. But that's none of my business...🐸☕️

Aren’t threats of violence and harassment already crimes? What was the need for this law and how is it different from the laws that already exist?
