Opinion | Search online images for “sow in gestation crate” and you might understand why I think California's animal treatment standards should be upheld.

A still image of mother pigs being kept in “gestation crates” at a farm in Kentucky that supplies pork to Greeley-based meatpacking giant, JBS USA. An undercover activist shot video inside the facility between December 2017 and March 2018. The nonprofit organization Mercy for Animals says the footage uncovered abuses and the damaging impacts of keeping pigs in the small crates.

Although curious, social animals by nature, sows are not able to interact with their own kind or with their environment. Devoid of social and mental stimulation, they chew the bars of their cage and become listless. This right to act through elected state representatives or the ballot initiative process is at stake in a case that will be argued before the Supreme Court next month.

For example, states cannot enact laws that regulate or tax goods made in other states differently than goods made in-state which frequently happened before the adoption of the Constitution when the country was under the Articles of Confederation.
