Proposed New York state legislation would charge New Jersey drivers a $50 fee if a the state passes a law blocking state agencies from helping New York City enforce camera tickets.

A New York City speed camera on St. Paul's Avenue, near PS 65 in Staten Island. Two New York state lawmakers want to charge New Jersey drivers a $50 non-cooperation fee to enter the city if the Garden State enacts a law barring state agencies from proving information about driver who get red light or speed camera tickets in the city.

“It’s one of the dumbest ideas I’ve ever heard. It will drive more people away from a city desperately trying to recover from COVID,” O’Scanlon told NJ Advance Media. “New Jersey bans automated enforcement because we know it doesn’t improve safety and is theft.” A spokesman for Gov. Phil Murphy declined to comment on pending legislation. New Jersey’s bill must be passed by the full Senate and Assembly and signed by the governor to become law, milestones that earlier versions of the bill didn’t reach.ended a pilot red light camera program eight years ago

The legislation leaves it up to the New York City DOT to “construct, operate and maintain facilities and equipment identifying those vehicles” to collect fees from.

Screw NYC...don't cooperate and implement the $100 fee for New Yorkers.

Redlight and speed cameras are revenue generators disguised as increased safety and didn’t go through in Nj because they sped up yellow lights so they could issue more tickets. I would like to see how many tickets would be issued by NY to NJ drivers and what percentage are paid.
