HONG KONG, Sept 30 — Hong Kong's government has refused permission for jailed pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai to be represented by a British lawyer at his upcoming national security trial, a court heard today.
Today, High Court judge Alex Lee confirmed that the Secretary for Justice and Hong Kong's Bar Association had both opposed the application for"London counsel" for Lai. Lai, 74, is one of Hong Kong's best known pro-democracy activists. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
