A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of a Texas law targeting social media companies like Facebook and Twitter in a win for Republicans who accuse the platforms of censoring conservative speech. The U.S. Supreme Court will likely have the final say.

But the decision by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans is unlikely to be the last word in a legal battle that has stakes beyond Texas, and could impact how some of the world’s biggest tech companies regulate content by their users.

The Texas law, signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott last year, has been challenged by tech trade groups that warn that it would prevent platforms from removing extremism and hate speech. A similar law was also passed in Florida andThe final say is likely to come from the U.S. Supreme Court, which earlier this year“Today we reject the idea that corporations have a freewheeling First Amendment right to censor what people say,” U.S. Circuit Court Judge Andrew Oldham wrote.

NetChoice, one of the groups challenging the law, expressed disappointment in a statement that pointed out the ruling was the opposite of the decision made in the lawsuit over the Florida law.

Texas can sure waste money. Zero return for massive investment.

Conservative speech aka racist shit

They take the fun out of everything they touch... Vote blue or independent....not red, red means magas....

Imagine arguing who get's to enter the only bar in a country. Why not build more bars that don't focus on either political ideology. A objective company that realizes you can accept anyone's opinion. By diversifying the market, it creates competition and more consumer power.

Sorry, not sorry, but “conservative” speech these days are filled with lies and code for violence. They aren’t booting you for being conservative. You highjacked that word and use it to describe what is anti American and anti democracy type posts. Grow up.

Karma

not a serious country

So basically censoring lies?

Conservatives telling private businesses what they can do… All because their lies and bullshit got thrown in the trash where it belongs. On the flip side now there will be more digital evidence to use against them when dumb shit like Jan 6 happens again.

Important context: the 5th circuit is one of (is probably) the most conservative / Republican-friendly circuit in the country. 19/25 current judges were appointed by Republicans, including 6 from Trump.

More like censoring HATE SPEECH! Yeah! Texas has become the Fascist Model for the rest of these scum.

These judges are maga stooges.

Republicans ruin everything.

Ok, everyone go over to that Trump social media site and post actual truth and see how long it takes to get kicked off the platform… Republicans are just gaming the system like always.

Corps are people...unless they exercise their 1A rights by shutting down antidemocratic, racist, misogynist hate speech our white nationalist party loves to hear

Hate speech isn't protected speech. I'm a cat. Fuckin' judge doesn't know this shit?

Republicans are anti business.
