Over a thousand protesters have gathered outside Parliament House to demand the new Labor government follow through on its promise to abolish temporary protection visas, giving refugees permanent rights to live in Australia.

Iranian refugee Rose Ghaed Rahmati says she came to Australia in 2013 and, after finishing years 10 and 11, was told the government would not “cover” her for university. “So the hope was gone, and we couldn’t study … and now, I’m 25, and still I don’t have the visa to get to university and study,” she told Sky News Australia.
