The workers took strike action last month saying they had been left with no option in their efforts to secure a pay increase that protected their standard of living amid soaring inflation.

Kyte Powertech management and SIPTU attended the Labour Court yesterday and it is understood a new set of pay proposals were agreed. "We expect the Labour Court to issue a recommendation on Monday and we will put this to members at a general meeting on Thursday with a ballot to follow thereafter," said SIPTU Divisional Organiser Greg Ennis.

Kyte Powertech employs 455 people in its Cavan plant, making it the largest private employer in the region. According to the firm, 360 of these are members of SIPTU, although the union itself puts the figure at 420.As a result, the issue was jointly referred to the Workplace Relations Commission, with engagements taking place involving both the firm and the union in February and April. The matter was then referred to the Labour Court in May and it subsequently issued a recommendation which was also rejected by workers.
