An Edson man

Prosecutor Photini Papadatou said Berube is holding the trial “hostage” and that the Crown will consider a request to continue the trial in his absence if his outbursts continue.Berube, 39, was arrested along with a teenage co-accused on Feb. 27, 2020, after break-ins and suspicious fires in Edson, Whitecourt and Niton Junction that resulted in more than $10 million in damage.

“I assumed, and also gathered from his movements in the courtroom, that he was in a great deal of pain,”“I was not satisfied that in that moment he would be able to properly understand what was going on.”
