The lingering issues that plague sports involvement, players’ rights and contract termination in the Nigerian sports industry highlight the need for implementable legal and institutional frameworks. BABATUNDE TITILOLA speaks with a sports lawyer, Kelvin Omuojine, on the problems of Sports Law and how government agencies can improve the emerging law field.

Sports law refers to the whole legal framework that regulates the business and practice of sports as an industry. The area has emerged over the past few decades, especially due to the significant growth in the commercial value of sports and the different types of transactions involved.

These rights can be enjoyed when the sport governing bodies strengthen the regulatory framework and dispute resolution mechanism within their sport, and when the athletes and other industry participants acknowledge that there are legal implications and take steps to protect or exploit their rights just as anyone would in any industry or business. There must be a clear understanding of their role and relationship with sports governing bodies.

The government should adopt a sports governance code that will outline minimum standards and compliance benchmarks for the national sports federations as a form of checks and ensuring they are set up and operating in a manner that will optimise results.
