Toronto's mayor will soon have the power to do pretty much anything Doug Ford likes Toronto TOpoli

The proposed changes to mayoral powers will take effect on Nov. 15 of this year, if all goes as planned for Ford and friends, which means that we also don't know exactly who Ontario's new"strong mayors" will be.

Doug Ford’s “Strong Mayor” legislation doesn’t create housing or strengthen Toronto. It weakens our local democracy, diminishes councillors’ ability to hold a mayor to account & with a veto for provincial objectives, in the wrong hands the mayor becomes a servant of Queen’s Park. Both Toronto and Ottawa are holding municipal elections at the end of October. If incumbents John Tory and Jim Watson secure another term, they'll be the province's first mayors with U.S.-style veto powers.

It's a concept many online aren't entirely comfortable with for Ontario, chiefly because of how much more power this move would seemingly give the province.wrote one local"In other words: Doug Ford gets to tell the mayors of Toronto and Ottawa what to do," wrote another. "How is this a 'strong mayor'?"

Ford’s Strong Mayor proposal has nothing to do with housing as he himself already admitted. It’s about this Premier giving mayors the power to help him bypass councils, override local bylaws and stifle consultation.

Disgusting. Greedy. And morally bankrupt. DougFord JohnTory Toronto

...and the move towards tyranny continues.

And he has 4 more years to create more legislation just like this one .

The mayor's are going to have to dance to Ford's tunes !

Mayor's will be under Ford's thumb , some calling it power ; other's ' puppet politics '

False.

If Ontario gets anymore weird, I will move out so fast and spent the money I need to, I have never really enjoyed living here. I am westerner born and raised. People are not friendly in the east. I have been in Toronto way too long!

Extra fortified powers for a big city mayor only appear to be part of the tendency of Conservatives to be over and above the society they live in. The issue is control: we already saw the ejection of homeless people from parks in very hot weather.

Puppet mayor, coming soon to a city near you.

Sounds like Hitler reborn.

Good it's about time lefties get more triggered. 👏 👏

IMO, This makes him the Lord of the land and marks a return to the feudal system

This is 'Terrifying'!!!!! Yes, I voted for 'Doug Ford and the Conservatives', because, I'm most comfortable with a 'Conservative Premier', as opposed to 'A Liberal or NDP Premier'!!! But, I don't believe in Mayors having 'Almost Unlimited Power to Rule, er Govern their Cities'!

Because Ford is too lazy that's why

This is spectacular! Now things can get done. This should have passed years ago when the Liberals and Dalton McGuinty tried to pass this.

I don't really know what these two think of the poor, the colored and other minorities?

Lol the funniest part is when they mention safeguards in place to prevent power hungry leaders from making poor decisions (cough cough Justin cough) … buckle up our system is getting more autocratic by the day.

Exactly how authoritarianism & corruption grows!

The idea that one person decides what is best for 3 million people is…Feudal.

Feudalism

This is why it’s so important to vote.

Good!

And, he will.

Great.

Doug will be the TO mayor one day.

Get rid of Tory

That sounds like the worst possible way to run a city
