Originally passed by Georgia lawmakers in 2014, the law allows people to carry guns in bars, churches, schools, private businesses when permitted by owners, and publicly owned land, like Piedmont Park. A 2019 Georgia Supreme Court ruling expanded the law, to where short-term private events operating on public land could not enforce a weapons ban.
Music Midtown, which launched in 1996, had long barred attendees from bringing guns into the festival. It’s common for festivals to ban weapons. Bonnaroo, Coachella and Lollapalooza are among the many that do so. Mega concert promoter Live Nation, which now runs, Music Midtown, must decide whether to relocate the festival to privately-owned land for 2023 or permanently shutter the festival.
Music Midtown was previously inactive between 2006 and 2010. The 2020 version was cancelled due to the pandemic. Past Music Midtown headliners include Eminem, Bruno Mars, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Travis Scott and Billie Eilish.
