A new law in Florida will allow U.S. military veterans — but not their spouses — to obtain a temporary teaching certificate without a bachelor’s degree, as long as they meet other education requirements.

that a military spouse with no educational background had actually been awarded a teaching position after only 12 hours of classroom observation.

Confusion over this law appears to stem from some poor wording on the Florida DOE website. After this new law was enacted, the website contained a section entitled “Military Personnel, Veterans & Spouses” which summarized the various aspects of the new law.

The Gainesville Sun published the following correction to their story: “Correction: An earlier version of this article stated spouses of veterans could receive a five-year teaching voucher. The Florida Department of Education, however, has clarified that spouses are only eligible for fee waivers.”“Bills Signed by the Governor in Fort Walton Beach to Support Military Families.” Niceville.Com, 10 June 2022, https://niceville.

Why were their spouses getting it anyway? I didn’t see any spouses on any deployments I went on.

Wtf

What could possibly go wrong? - USAF Enlisted Veteran via 1970s

LIterally weaponizing education. 🙄

This is a bad idea. Whoever seconded this proposal should be fired.

Because it doesn't take being taught how to teach effectively in college. Just show up and you'll figure it out. Such continuing disrespect for educators.

Lownotes1 That’s absolutely ridiculous.

Good luck with that..

Seems DeSantis is moving towards keeping the young minds of Florida in forced ignorance... All the easier for him to control & manipulate SMH

American education system 🫣

Service guarantees Citizenship! WouldYouLikeToLearnMore StarshipTroopers

What could go wrong ? 🙄

I’m not sure where this will end.

I mean we elect people to school boards based on nothing but strongly held opinions, so why not go the extra step and let retired soldiers teach grade school based on nothing but patriotic zeal? In other news, please stop the planet. I want to get off.

Florida doesn’t pay teachers a living wage!

JFC.

VoteDeSantisOut

Sure, they may not be qualified, but they're still allowed to pay for classroom materials out of their own pocket like real teachers.

As a veteran, I can honestly say that nothing to do with Service immediately qualifies you to teach.

Further dumb down FL.

What kind of ppl want their children to have a poor education?

What’s next? Will they be allowed to practice other professions like law or nursing?

Quality Florida education

WTF

Safe to assume Fla is allowing this to possibly curb school shootings? Which begs the question, are they allowed to carry on school grounds?

This is not a good plan. Most/vast majority of veterans should never be allowed to be in a classroom to teach, with or (especially) without a Bachelor’s degree.

Will DeathSantis also send teachers into his new private militia without training? Or mechanics to be surgeons? They both fix things, right?

Bunch of vets with PTSD and no formal education training trying to control unruly kids in over-sized FL classrooms. What could go wrong?

Florida home school your children. Especially babies of color...learn your history.

Why am I getting Kindergarten Cop vibes from this? “I’m not a policeman, I’m a Princess!”

Have never understood the notion of requiring teaching certificates. Do college teachers have them? The job is difficult but not terribly complicated imo.

nothing against Vets, but education is a science. It requires specific training on the subject matter veing taught AND education strategies. Desantis is playing politics with education and it will further degrade Florida's education system. We can do better.

Gulp

Lol. Teach kids to shine boots and assemble a rifle

unqualified vets in a room full of boisterous kids - what could go wrong?

As if that was the weird part. Well now he can underpay teachers an vets. Two bird desnatis

Isn’t education in Florida already behind enough?

why not go on line 100 hrs / reading 100 hrs / math 100 hrs / how to write skip the 20 hrs a week , 30 weeks a yr ; 12 yrs .. diploma

This is ridiculous. Hiring teachers who are LESS qualified will result in poorer educational opportunities for students. Being in the military does not replace the education one receives in order to teach. Hell, in my state, you need an MA to be a teacher.

You can be well qualified for a teaching position, educationally, but still suffer from crippling PTSD which will certainly affect how you teach/react to your students. VoteBlue

As a public school teacher with over 25 years of experience, I’d love to be a fly on the wall for this experiment. On the one hand, some people may find their calling. On the other hand, knowing what it’s like to have 20 kindergartners at the beginning of the school year…

Why not have the degree, are they saying the Florida education requirements need to be less then that of other states? Make college affordable to properly educate the educators, as a suggestion.

GovRonDeSantis is trying to dumb us all down. No college degree. Vets that have been fighting overseas. This is absolutely insane! As a military member of our community with two children, i would never allow this.

This is INSANE These people are unqualified and it feels like a very specific attempt to like attempt to brainwash children into a specific ideology

I hope I'm not in the minority thinking that this is INSANE.

Nothing like the GOP to lie…

Great PTSD trained military soldiers with only basic education (60 credits especially if obtain online while in the military is NOTHING ) AWFUL NOT qualified to teach!!! And classrooms are hard so now turning public education into MilitarySchools funded by our Tax dollars

you mean they have to go thru the right process to teach our kids ? good

I don’t want someone without a degree teaching my kid.

It is a creative experiment to see if there is a way to help with the teacher shortage while also providing opportunities to Veterans. Not to mention some Vets may be willing to help with security at schools as they all have arms training as well. Brilliant!

The sad irony here is that the teaching profession has been unfairly maligned for decades because the public believes instructors don’t possess a rigorous academic college background. So now, students will have teachers with little or NO academic college level experience. 🙄

Any jackass can learn elementary math, but only a select amount can teach it to a young child and have the patience to work with them. Making it easier to be a teacher wont improve your child's education. Try paying more and stop telling them what to do.

So we’re running off teachers so they can be replaced by military? When will we be required to refer to school children as the “Trump Youth”?

Great initiative to deal with the teaching shortage, this is just a temporary exemption, the service members have a specific timeframe in which they have to meet all educational requirements

A claim made by DeSantis himself.

Why wouldn’t this be applicable to all Americans? I don’t see how having served in the military would determine if someone could pass the requirements for a teaching certificate. If someone can “pass” the required tests….this should apply to all.
