Expert doubtful competition bureau would find price-fixing in Alberta's high gas prices abpoli

University of Ottawa associate law professor Jennifer Quaid said a conviction for price-fixing has to come with an intentional, explicit agreement to hold prices at a specific point. When it comes to the gas industry, the price at the pump is more likely to come from a retailer’s understanding of the industry and commonly-known information on costs, she said.

“The bureau will have to look into it, of course, there could be evidence for price-fixing, but you’d have to find evidence of an agreement to fix prices and I don’t think you will find that.”Article content “Despite Alberta’s significant tax advantage, the gap between Alberta’s average price and the Canadian average has disappeared over the last 10 days or so,”

In emails to Postmedia, representatives for the bureau confirmed Tuesday that they received Kenney’s letter but said they legally can’t confirm whether or not they’re investigating.
