Indiana has yet to distribute more than half of the $125-per-taxpayer payments due under an automatic refund law triggered by last year’s large surplus that was boosted by federal COVID-19 relief funding.

FILE - Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb speaks with reporters at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis on Feb. 23, 2022. Holcomb proposed a plan Thursday, June 9, 2022, to tap into the state's growing budget surplus and send $225 in payments to taxpayers to provide them with relief amid the worst inflation in 40 years.

Indiana has yet to distribute more than half of the $125-per-taxpayer payments due under an automatic refund lawThe state Department of Revenue said it has paid about $250 million in direct deposits of the estimated $545 million to be distributed. But printed checks to some 1.7 million taxpayers who haven’t supplied bank account information likely won’t begin going out until mid-August.

“The idea of these checks was to provide financial support for people that were struggling. If you’re struggling, you can’t wait,” Pollak said. On July 25th, the legislature will meet to start discussing an additional $225 taxpayer refund and abortion legislation. The session started July 6, and the legislature has 40 days from the start date to complete the special session.

“ is just not very well targeted,” Pollak said. “Cutting a fixed-amount check for everybody is the least amount of policy work you can do. It’s the simplest policy where you’re putting no thought into it. There’s a lot better options.” The legislature should provide “more efficient and more impactful relief efforts” for residents, Melton said.
