Residents and tourists in Sydney's CBD and inner-city suburbs will have to wait for e-scooters to be available as trials are launched in other areas of NSW.

Sydney councils that have refused to participate in an electric scooter trial have been accused of missing an opportunity to make the city more accessible as more details about what riders will and won't be allowed to do are revealed.City of Sydney and Inner West Council have voted against being part of the trialNSW is the last state in Australia to roll out a shared e-scooter scheme with the first trial set to begin later this month.

"It's really surprising that the pinnacle of tourism for the country is missing this opportunity," Dr Buning said.Dr Buning, who has researched how tourists use e-scooters, said visitors found them an easy and convenient way to explore a new city. "In Brisbane, it's absolutely the quickest way to get through the city during peak travel times," he said.Footpaths off-limits

Unlike other cities, people who hire e-scooters in NSW will not be permitted on footpaths during the trial.

Also, 2.7k fines for riding safely with private escooters which were due to be legal here first over the rentals is just an insane amount higher than high range drink driving (2.2k minus jail) and importing biohazrads (2.6k). Just today there were corrupt NSW officials on ABC.

💯% escooters have the opportunity of a lifetime to revolutionise in a green way how we travel locally. I recently was featured in an article below. There is a protest being organised on 31 July in an FB event. and we have a group

I have mixed thoughts. Ebikes have to be pedal assisted to 25kph. Some escooters I've seen easily hit 40kph. I also know a doctor who uses them to commute to the hospital. He says quicker, no parking, no waiting and no disruptions. He is also sensible with their use.

The right decision. Scooters Melbourne = fail.

A bike with a motor is a motorbike. Same rules should apply. Simple really.

The new Uber, turn up without permission or planning and we’re all left with the issues with no tax revenue to pay for it.

Council stop dangerous e-scooters being unleashed on its street. Sound like a great council. Do you research and look what happened in Auckland? The injuries the costs and the many problems they cause wherever they are.

E-scooters on footpaths = more biff!

Maybe check hospital imjuries in the ACT...

They have been a massive SUCCESS in Canberra. Ironically, the biggest weekend of usage is when the Summernats HotRod festival comes to town.

rather just having proper cycling infrastructure cheers tho

Just more garbage on our streets. Not necessary in a country with good public transportation services. Otherwise get an Uber.

Well played. They’re a bloody menace. The equivalent of your city catching herpes. Would not recommend. - Canberra

Scooters are a menace. Scooters are dangerous for riders. Scooters are dangerous for pedestrians. Scooter trials are being pushed by media manipulators and paid media spruikers - to create profits. Scooters suck big time. .

Thank god, some councils are thinking about the safety of their residents and the general public in regards to allowing motorized scooters in pedestrian precincts. All motorized transport has to be restricted to roads and has to be registered & covered by 3rd party insurance

Good idea Sydney, the damn things are everywhere in Brisbane.... Keep them off the footpaths.

Australia, the retirement country. No vision. No energy (literally) no future.

They should not be criticised they are taking a very sensible approach.

Good. They're a menace.

it's okay they're mostly a safety hazard for the disabled, so 👍 full steam ahead!

We have them in Townsville and they've taken the place of the shopping trolley. Dumped on the side of the road, thrown in waterways and left where they cause a danger to motorists and pedestrians alike. And the bag snatchers love them!!

This trial is pathetic. Why cant electric scooters simply use the same cycleways that bicycles do, and bike lanes on roads? 20kms an hour is actually pretty slow - slower than manual bicycles. Can anyone in bureaucracy that can explain why escooters are treated dif to bikes?

Smart.

Unfortunately many riders don’t do the right thing when riding on “shared” pathways. Keep them on the roads, not amongst pedestrians on footpaths. Absolutely chaos on the shared pathways here on the cityofgoldcoast with motorised cycles, scooters etc.

Clean and Green they say

Bro…these things are everywhere in downtown Dallas, just cluttered on every corner.
