After being convicted of repeatedly raping and confining his wife and stepdaughter, sometimes while threatening them with a knife, a man put his head in his hands and burst into tears, wailing intermittently.
The victims’s identities are protected by a court-ordered publication ban, and the man’s name is being withheld because it would reveal their identity. Zerr found there was an “uncensored rawness” to her testimony that enhanced her credibility, including a discomfort in describing certain sex acts that she found “unacceptable” and “dirty,” and attributing words and actions to her husband consistent with the kinds of distorted beliefs that breed domestic violence.
The girl said she remembered it hurting and asked him to stop. He later told her he would die if he didn’t have sex. When she asked if they should call her mom, he said only she could help him, and when she asked what sex was, he showed her pornography, she said. The man’s lawyer, John Abu, argued there were crucial inconsistencies between the girl’s testimony and what she told a police officer who took her initial statement in December 2020.
