The Albanese government has joined a legal bid to strike down Victoria’s electric vehicle tax.

With NSW and Western Australia set to introduce their own road charge schemes, the outcome of the case, and Dreyfus’ intervention, is likely to determine the future of road taxes and other charges levied by states that may be unconstitutional. The Commonwealth collects around $12 billion in fuel tax every year, but that will gradually shift to state coffers if more motorists adopt electric vehicles and states levy their own distance-based user charges.

She said the states were trying to prepare for the new economy and make sure the tax base is suitable for the future.

pwhatch ffs the use our roads pay the tax...

pwhatch Dan Andrews should clear the decks now, terminate this tax and refund those that paid it already. There's an election looming so remove it immediately to avoid more embarrassment.

pwhatch How are they going to fund road maintenance when everyone is driving EV’s?

pwhatch Only wish the corporate bookies would join in and put the wretched point of consumption tax to the sword. How that isn't a tax on interstate trade is beyond me.

pwhatch Good - such a regressive tax.

pwhatch Yes! Do it!
